Learning to drive in Plymouth

I pick up and drop off across Plymouth’s PL1, PL2, PL3, PL4, PL5 and PL6 postcodes — from home, work or college, whichever is easier on the day. The practical test for the city is taken from the Plymouth Driving Test Centre on Ernesettle Lane in PL5, which is inside the area I cover.

Plymouth gives you plenty to learn on: busy A-roads and dual carriageways, big roundabouts, tight residential streets, hills, and the city-centre one-way system. That’s one reason every lesson is two hours.

About Marcin

I’m Marcin, a DVSA Approved Driving Instructor. I’ve been teaching people to drive in Plymouth for four years, and I run Gearshift as an independent school: one instructor, one car, no call centre.

You learn with me every lesson, in the same car, and when you have a question you message me directly.

How I teach

Lessons adapted to how you learn

Everyone learns differently, so I don’t run every lesson the same way. Some people want to talk it through first, some want to see it drawn out, some want to try it, stop, and try again. All of those are fine.

  • Clear explanations — plain language, and a diagram when a picture says it better.
  • A predictable structure — you’ll know what the lesson is about before we set off.
  • Manageable steps — one thing at a time, then we build on it.
  • Repetition when you need it — as many times as it takes, without any fuss.
  • Calm communication — no raised voice, no pressure, no comparing you with anyone else.

I’ve taught learners who are nervous, and learners who are autistic or have ADHD, and the same thing applies to everyone: we go at your pace. If there’s anything that would make lessons easier for you — how I give instructions, how much we talk, how we plan the lesson — tell me and we’ll build it in. Parents are welcome to message me to ask about any of this.

What to expect

How lessons work

  1. Message me on WhatsApp

Say roughly where you are and when you’re usually free. I’ll reply with what I have.

  2. Your first lesson

We start with a chat about where you’re at and what you want from lessons. Then we drive, at your pace.

  3. Progress you can see

Each lesson builds on the last. At the end of every lesson we go through what went well and what needs work, agree the next steps, and book the next one.

  4. Getting ready for the test

When you’re ready, lessons focus on the test itself — the manoeuvres, the show-me-tell-me questions, and what test day is like.

I honestly couldn’t recommend this driving school enough! From my very first lesson, my driving instructor was patient, friendly and made me feel completely at ease. They explained everything clearly, never made me feel bad when I made mistakes, and always gave me the confidence to keep improving. I’m so grateful for all the help, support and confidence they gave me. Passing my test feels like such an achievement, and I know I wouldn’t have got there without their guidance. If you’re looking for a great driving school, I would 100% recommend them! Thank you Marcin!

Frequently asked questions

Do you cover my area?

I cover Plymouth’s PL1, PL2, PL3, PL4, PL5 and PL6 postcodes, and I’ll pick you up from home, work or college. If you’re just outside that, message me and ask — it depends on where and when.

Are lessons manual or automatic?

Manual only. I teach in a manual Mazda CX-30 fitted with dual controls. If you’re set on automatic, I’m not the right instructor for you, and I’d rather say that up front.

How long is a lesson?

Two hours, always. It’s enough time to get out of your own area, practise something properly, and drive back without rushing.

How many lessons will I need?

It varies a lot, and anyone who gives you a number before meeting you is guessing. After your first lesson I’ll give you an honest idea of where you are and what a sensible plan looks like.

Do I need anything before my first lesson?

Your provisional driving licence, and your glasses or contact lenses if you need them to read a number plate from 20 metres. That’s it — everything else is in the car, which has dual controls.

I’m nervous, or I haven’t driven for years. Is that OK?

Yes. We go at your pace, I explain things clearly, and nothing is rushed. Have a look at how I teach, and message me if you’d like to talk it through first.

What are your hours?

Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. If you need something specific, message me and I’ll tell you honestly whether I can do it.

What if I need to cancel?

Message me on WhatsApp as early as you can and we’ll rearrange. I ask for at least 48 hours’ notice; lessons cancelled with less notice than that are charged in full. Full details are in the terms and conditions.

Do you do intensive courses?

I teach regular weekly lessons and lesson blocks. If you’d like more than one lesson a week, ask — it depends on availability at the time.
